What Is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a time-honored therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves burning mugwort (Artemisia)—known as “moxa”—over specific acupuncture points. This gentle, warming technique has been practiced for over 2,000 years to stimulate the body’s energy flow (Qi), support circulation, and reinforce internal balance.
How It Works
- Indirect Moxibustion (most common): A moxa stick is held near the skin, warming the area just enough to boost circulation and relax tissue.
- Direct Non-Scarring: A small cone of moxa is placed briefly on the skin and removed before burning occurs.
- Often used alongside acupuncture needles, where warmth travels through the needle for deeper effect.
This heat penetrates the meridians, dispelling cold, opening channels, and supporting Qi and blood circulation.
What Moxibustion Can Help With
- Chronic pain & muscle stiffness — effective for back, joint, tendon conditions
- Circulation & inflammation — may boost local blood flow and reduce systemic inflammation
- Immune support — studies show increased white blood cell counts after treatment
- Digestive health — helps relieve bloating, IBS, diarrhea, and discomfort Women’s health & fertility — used for menstrual cramps, irregular cycles, and even turning breech babies
